Stringo - William Martinsson

This electronics engineer, downhill skier, and car enthusiast enjoys following an idea from an abstract concept to a functioning machine. And if he had to shed his human form, he’d rather be a Welsh Springer Spaniel than an elk. Why? Find out below.

Tell us how your journey with Stringo began!

“I got a summer job at the Stringo HQ last year while still studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at Umeå University. It was my dad who suggested it, I wasn’t familiar with the company before. I also did my thesis project at Stringo, and when I finished my degree, I was offered a permanent role. So you could say I had a soft transition into the team.”

What sort of projects did you work with when you first joined?

“During my summer job, I was mainly working with Stringo’s remote-controlled vehicle movers, helping out with assembling and testing the equipment. For my thesis project, I focused on AGV-related solutions (Automated Guided Vehicles). We see a lot of interest in this technology from the automotive industry—both as a tool for further automating manufacturing workflows, and as a cool way to display new car models.”

What does your current role involve?

“As an electronics engineer, my job includes a fair amount of programming. But there’s a lot of variety, which I really enjoy. One day, I’m in the workshop programming and troubleshooting machines. The next, I’ll be sitting at a desk, working on designs. I like getting that balance between abstract and practical work. I’m able to follow an idea from the initial concept stage through to ensuring it works in the real world. And once it’s tested and confirmed, we can deliver the solution to our customers.”

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

“That there’s so much to learn, especially since this is my first proper job after university. I’m still getting familiar with our tools and development environments, as well as just general work routines. But I get a lot of support from my more experienced colleagues. Tomas Holmgren, System Design Engineer, is my main mentor and go-to person whenever I have questions. As a whole, I think Stringo is a fantastic workplace. The atmosphere is great, and you really feel appreciated for what you do.”

On a more personal note, what do you enjoy doing outside of work?

“I like tinkering with cars, and I’m also into downhill skiing. There’s a slope in Kramfors, just minutes from where I live. It’s not exactly top-notch, but it’s extremely convenient. If I want something more challenging, I head to the bigger slopes in Funäsdalen, where my family has a cabin.”

What’s your favourite food?

“Elk stew. I don’t eat it nearly as often as I’d like. It’s great with pasta. My grandmother used to hunt a lot and cook it for us. But now that she’s older, it’s becoming more of a rare luxury.”

Lastly, if you were an animal, which one would you be and why?

“A dog, because they tend to get spoiled and very well taken care of. My parents’ Welsh Springer Spaniel is a perfect example.”
